You press the reset button. Nothing. You check the panel and the breaker is sitting fine. Yet the outlet in your bathroom, kitchen, or garage is still dead. This is one of the more common calls we get, and the culprit is almost always a GFCI outlet not working the way it’s supposed to.

What a GFCI Outlet Actually Does
GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter. Unlike a standard breaker, which only cares about overall current load, a GFCI watches for a tiny imbalance between the current going out and the current coming back. That imbalance usually means electricity is finding an unintended path, sometimes through water, sometimes through a person. When it detects that, it cuts power in a fraction of a second, well before a standard breaker would ever react.
That’s why you’ll find them required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, and anywhere else near water. It’s also why a single GFCI can control several outlets at once. One tripped GFCI can silently kill power to outlets in a completely different part of the room, or even a different room entirely, without ever showing up as a tripped breaker at the panel.
Step One: Find the Actual GFCI
Before assuming the outlet itself is broken, find the GFCI it’s wired through. Not every dead outlet has its own test and reset buttons. Many bathrooms and kitchens run several standard outlets off one GFCI outlet elsewhere in the room, or even in an adjacent room. Walk your kitchen, bathrooms, laundry area, and garage and press “reset” on every GFCI outlet you find, even the ones that look fine. This single step solves the majority of these calls before anyone needs to open a wall.
If Reset Doesn’t Work: Check for a Real Trip
Press “test,” then “reset.” You should hear or feel a distinct click both times. If the reset button won’t stay in, or it pops back out immediately, that’s a sign the GFCI actually tripped for a reason, not just cosmetically. Common triggers include a wet outlet cover, a small appliance with a failing internal ground, or moisture that’s worked its way into the box itself over time. Unplug everything on that circuit and try again. If it holds with nothing plugged in, the problem is with one of your devices, not the wiring.
When the GFCI Itself Has Failed
GFCI outlets aren’t permanent. The internal sensing mechanism wears out with age and with every trip it absorbs, typically lasting somewhere in the 10 to 15 year range depending on use. An outlet that won’t hold a reset at all, clicks but never restores power, or shows a worn, cracked, or discolored face is telling you it’s done its job for the last time. This is especially common in homes where the GFCI has never been replaced since the original build.
A Note on Older Homes
If your home predates the 1980s, it may not have GFCI protection at all in areas that require it under today’s code. That’s a different problem than a GFCI that’s failed. It means the circuit was never protected in the first place, which is worth addressing even if nothing seems obviously wrong right now. GFCI requirements have expanded significantly over the decades, and a home renovated in stages may have GFCI protection in some wet areas but not others, depending on when each section was last updated.
Why This Is Worth Taking Seriously
It’s easy to treat a dead outlet as a minor inconvenience, especially once you’ve found a workaround by using a different outlet nearby. But GFCI protection exists specifically because standard breakers aren’t fast enough to prevent shock in wet environments. A GFCI that’s failed silently, meaning it no longer trips when it should even though power still flows normally, is arguably more dangerous than one that’s obviously dead, because there’s no visible symptom telling you the protection is gone. That’s the whole reason monthly testing matters more for these outlets than for a standard receptacle.
A Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Find every GFCI in the house, not just the room with the dead outlet, and press reset on each one.
- Press test, then reset, and confirm you feel or hear a distinct click both times.
- Unplug everything on the affected circuit and try resetting again to rule out a faulty appliance.
- Check the outlet face for cracks, discoloration, or a reset button that won’t stay in, all signs of a worn-out unit.
- If your home is older, confirm whether GFCI protection actually exists where code now requires it.
If none of that restores power, stop there. At that point you’re either dealing with a GFCI that needs replacing or a wiring issue upstream of it, and both are worth having a professional confirm rather than guess.

Make Testing a Habit
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends testing GFCI outlets monthly, using the test and reset buttons, to confirm they’re actually functioning and not just present. A GFCI outlet that looks normal but has failed internally provides zero protection, and there’s often no visible sign until it’s tested.
