Why the Wiring Isn’t a DIY Job
New light fixtures, recessed cans, or added circuits mean working inside your walls and ceiling with live wiring — running cable, making connections at the box, and tying into your panel correctly. Mistakes here aren’t just inconvenient; they’re a real fire and shock hazard, and most jurisdictions require a permit and licensed electrician for anything beyond a simple fixture swap on an existing box. If you’re just replacing a fixture on an existing box with the power off, that’s a reasonable homeowner task — but adding new circuits, recessed lighting, or moving fixtures to new locations is licensed electrician work.
What to Expect From a Professional Installation
Your electrician will walk your space with you to finalize fixture placement, confirm your panel has capacity for any new circuits, run and connect the wiring to code, and make sure everything is properly grounded and inspected where required. For larger projects, like whole-home LED conversions or new recessed lighting throughout a floor, this is usually a one-to-two day job depending on scope.
