More homeowners across Seattle, Bellevue, and the rest of the Eastside are plugging in overnight instead of stopping at a public charging station, and it’s easy to see why. A home charger is more convenient, usually cheaper to run over time, and means you start every morning with a full “tank.” But the charger itself is only half the equation — how it gets installed matters just as much as which one you buy.
We get asked a lot of the same questions from homeowners who are shopping for their first home charger. Here’s what we tell them.
Level 1 vs. Level 2: The Real Difference Is Speed
Almost every electric vehicle comes with a basic Level 1 cord that plugs into a standard household outlet. It works, but it’s slow — often adding only a handful of miles of range per hour. For most daily drivers, that’s not enough to reliably wake up to a full charge.
Level 2 chargers run on a dedicated 240-volt circuit, similar to what powers an electric dryer or range. They charge several times faster than Level 1 and are what most homeowners end up installing once they realize how much they’re actually driving. The tradeoff is that a Level 2 charger needs a proper circuit run to it — which is where the electrical side of this decision comes in.
What Actually Matters When Choosing a Charger
Once you’re looking at Level 2 chargers, the differences between brands come down to a few practical things:
Amperage. Chargers are commonly available in a range of amperages, and the one that makes sense for your home depends on your vehicle’s onboard charger and, just as important, what your electrical panel can actually support. This is a question worth answering before you buy, not after.
Indoor vs. outdoor rated. If the charger will live in a garage, an indoor-rated unit is fine. If it’s mounted outside — common for homes without garage access — you’ll want a charger rated for outdoor exposure, since Seattle’s wet winters aren’t kind to equipment that isn’t built for it.
Smart features. Wi-Fi connectivity, scheduled charging (useful if your utility offers time-of-use rates), and app-based monitoring are nice-to-haves on most modern chargers. They’re worth having, but they shouldn’t be the deciding factor over amperage and build quality.
Cord length and mounting. Where the charger will be mounted relative to where your car parks matters more than people expect. A charger with a cord that’s just a little too short is a daily annoyance.
We’re not going to tell you one specific brand or model is the “best” — the right charger depends on your vehicle, your panel, and where it’s going to be mounted. What we can tell you is that the installation is not the place to cut corners.
Why This Isn’t a DIY Project
A Level 2 charger installation usually involves running a new dedicated circuit from your electrical panel, which means working inside a live panel, sizing the wire and breaker correctly for the charger’s draw, and often evaluating whether your panel has the capacity to handle the additional load safely. If it doesn’t, that’s a separate conversation about a panel upgrade — one that’s much better to have before an installer is standing in your garage.
This is licensed electrical work, not a weekend project. An undersized circuit or an incorrectly installed charger is a real fire and shock hazard, and most manufacturers require professional installation to honor the warranty in the first place. A Note on Incentives
Federal and Washington state incentives for EV chargers and home electrical upgrades do exist, but the details — what qualifies, how much, and through when — change often enough that we won’t quote you a specific number here that might be outdated by the time you read this.
